rather experienced player, but i wouldn't claim to have done everything either. Two small questions:
  • How can i find rock crystals? IIRC, the wiki says they're available just about everywhere, but i've never seen any. i usually settle near magma tho.
  • What exactly does toggling an animal as "Available" in the z menu do? I'm playing a hermit chalange and would like for my animals to follow him around. The trained war dogs do, but I'd like the rest of the animals to as well.

The only place in which I've reliably found rock crystals is gabbro. I can't recall seeing them in any other stone.

IIRC an "available" critter is one that can be adopted by your dwarves (or in this case, dwarf). Without it the creature will not be adopted. It's not a sure thing that available creatures will be taken though. Sometimes dwarves just aren't interested.

Gabboro... hmmm..... i'll focus on that from now on then...

as to adoption: damn, no way to guarantee it then? oh, well...

Rock crystal's can show up about anywhere, but they do compete with every other gem out there. Best thing to do is cross your fingers and pray to find them.
