Goblin Breeding program
« on: February 13, 2009, 02:12:41 pm »

Firstly, is it possible for goblins to breed in fortress mode?
2nd. How? Do you assign them all to the same cage somewhere? Or can I drop a load in a sealed room?
3rd. Iv heard about them becoming friendly if they breed?
Thanks

If it does happen, you'd need to lock them in a room, not cages. Luckily, it doesn't have to be the same room. The big problem is that they need to become friends, lovers, and then get married before any spores are released.
They'll need food, and I don't know if they eat food you'd provide them.

If they're married and not in cages, though, you'll get Goblin Children.

Thanks, so if I throw them in a room together they would breed, unless they starve. Dam, anyone knows if they will eat plump helmets :)?

Hello!

I never use cage traps, so I have no information about this, therefore, I ask:

Do goblins actually use the dwarf simulation (eating/drinking/sleeping) in fortress mode, or do they use the pet/animal simulation (ageing/breeding only)? If it were the latter, would they really need to marry? Or rather, does fortress mode even simulate their relationships?

You have captured gobbos and want them to breed?

Interesting. I would think they would be still in hostile mode and to occupied with attacking at you (even when their siege has failed)

1. Yes, invaders can breed. It is a very odd thing to see, but I do have several children of invaders on my cage stockpile. I think they just came pregnant. You can test this as much as you want, but know that from what I have seen they already came pregnant.

2. Invaders are immune to hunger and thirst. Goblins, in essence, can live forever. No need to provide food.

3. Nobody knows if they actually form relationships when invading, but keeping them in a small space together would normally cause social interaction in Dwarves, and that is your best bet. Be sure to wait a two years or so before abandoning the project.

4. Now know I was testing this before abandoning a fortress, but from my tests the children are as friendly as their status shows. I don't know if their parents will attack them due to conflicting tags, but that is what these tests are for.

Unfortunately it's not possible to actually 'breed' them.
The offspring that Duke mentions would be from goblins that is already pregnant when they invades.

Interesting. I would think they would be still in hostile mode and to occupied with attacking at you (even when their siege has failed)

If the attack failed and they're not fearless they will only engage in combat if they are forced to. This is because when the attack fails they try to flee the area and will keep on trying to.

The sugested breeding ground is a squareish cave, 10x10ish. Seperated by a U-bend and retracted bridge, goblins are thrown in through a channeld Pit above. They would be recaptured by cage traps if I extended bridge. Shame they aint guna breed, fodder for my arena is nice :).

Just mod it in, as far as I know adding tags to an existing creature doesnt require a regen.

Mod WHAT in?

Goblins already breed naturally or else they'd die out in worldgen.

The question is whether or not intelligent NPCs will get preggers on your map in fortress mode.

Mod in a smelter reaction that produces goblin children, of course.

You can allow or stop your dwarves from eating these mushrooms, but it's entirely optional and doesn't turn Dwarf Fortress into Dwarf hookah-smoking pad.
