Magma does not ever solidify except when mixed with water.
Like water, magma evaporates when left at 1/7 for too long.
If tile that contains magma and a tile that contains water touch, regardless of the quantity of either, all of the water turns into steam and the magma turns into a tile of solid obsidian.

It was a silly attempt, but I bucketed water onto a magma tile and it didn't turn into obsidian. It just consumed one level of magma and steamed the water.

By accident.
It started out as a well, but ended up being pressurised and flooding the lower fortress.
