I reckon that ranged units (e.g Crossbowmen, archers) should be able to be fire off ledges and hit units a z level below them.

                                            ;;;;;;;;;...........
                                            ;Archer;..Goblin.
                                            ;;;;;;;;;...........
I'm pretty sure this has been happening since the release of 3D DwarfFort.
You just have to remember that every z-level down means one z-level unshotable.

so:

shooter z-lvl =                 Target must be at least # title away from the shooter
1                                    1
2                                    2
3                                    3
7                                    7
etc.                                etc.

*finally gets around to looking up the Waterbore*

Oh, those things?

Mine's completely different. Assuming we're both talking about the same Waterbore (my search lead me to several things), he's taking a large, constant flow of water and keeping it out of an area. I'm taking a small, finite amount of water and turning it into a large, constant flow of water.

As to whether it's bigger or not... we shall see.

 Indeed, I was referring to size and not function here. Still, I am interested in seeing your pumpworks and how you manage to squeeze every last drop out of rainwater.

I had an idea to make a an open field that could be set on fire as a siege defense. It would be contained to one area by a stone floor border and there would have to be a caravan bypass route (or maybe not). The problem would then be finding a reliable ignition device. I'm well aware of the fire imp + kitten combination, but I want to design something a little more sophisticated than that. I hear magma + barrels sometimes works, but I'll have to look into it.

Yeah, lost a legendary miner and a few marksdwarves to goblin archers who used that method on me in one of my older forts.

*facepalm*

I had a fair bit of misinformation. Turns out screw pumps don't turn any depth of water into 7/7 water anymore.

So much for that.

The rain's fairly constant, though, so I should get a fairly large reservoir up in a few years. Won't be anywhere near as grand as the water stretcher I theorized, sadly.

Wait, hold on a second...

EDIT: nope, random hunch was wrong. My water stretcher still fails at water stretching.

And my map isn't temperate, so I can't use the winter freezing to do a similar thing.

My first idea has probably been done before, but I'm thinking like a fountain:
Birds Eye View:
~~~  ~=Water
~O~  O="Fountainhead"
~~~
Underground View
                      ~~
                    ~^P~
                ==~P^~==
~~~++++++++^P++++
~~~~Channel~P^++++
~=Water, +=Ground, P^=Pump, "="=Walls.

Basically, I'd run a water source under a building and have it pumped up a z level or two above a small 'pond' of sorts, then have it flow down into the 'pond' I'm also thinking of having system to run the water back into the channel, just for kicks.

There's a wonderful example of a beautiful fountain here by Arthkan. It's a shame that the water seems to run in only one direction off the spire or otherwise it would be quite a spectacular pyramid. It's still quite a nice accomplishment (and is a very nice fort).
