[40d15] Forbidding mood items leads to interesting results
« on: September 07, 2009, 04:55:47 pm »

Version 40d15, only mod is <a href="http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=26858.0>Rysith's Orc mod[/url]. Was not using any external utilities at the time.

My weaponsmith got a secretive mood and claimed a Magma Forge. He grabbed iron bars and rough rubicelles, and got to work. I wanted to see if forbidding the iron bars (after he started working) would force him to use a different material.

He kept working, even though the iron bars were forbidden. Once he finished, he produced not an iron item, but a Toad Bone Crossbow! (see image in spoiler)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had saved after he started construction of the artifact, so I ended the process and reloaded. This time, I did not forbid the iron bars, but allowed him to work as he did before. He produced an Iron Short Sword, nothing out of the normal here.

I reloaded the save again, and this time forbade the iron bars, as I did before. He produced the exact same crossbow.

Egads!

Could this be another easter egg?

(I thought Toady said we'd found them all, though...)

Nope.  Indeed an easter egg and a nifty way of preventing a horrific crash.

It's these two bugs (possibly just one bug, as 861 seems to be the only known cause of 989).  Doesn't seem to be an easter egg per se -- toads just happen to be the first creature in the raws, and therefore toad bone is the first material.

# 000861 □ [dwarf mode][moods]   (Report) forbidding an item after a mood dwarf has started their construction will cause the item not to be used in the construction
# 000989 □ [dwarf mode][artifacts]   (Report) artifacts not made from proper material (so it defaults to toad bone)

That should work, yeah.  Make sure to follow these guidelines if you try it.

Oddly enough, I did a similar thing to a possessed Clothier, also while running the orc mod, but un-forbade some higher quality cloth I wanted him to use instead (both groups were plant fiber).  He gathered it up, fetched some high-value rough gems and then proceeded to completely ignore the cloth he'd gathered in favor of constructing a toad bone chausse decorated with the gems.

-EDIT-
I should also mention that I did the forbidding/un-forbidding before the Clothier began construction.

I quite often forbid items as they are brought to the workshop.
Unforbid them all, and they al get used  :D

As long as your haulers don't task to move the item back to its stockpile before your mooded dwarf begins construction.
