i can bullseye magma and all other features, such as hfs, chasms, etc. 100% of the time without any sort of modding.

That method has never worked for me. I don't understand it.

It's not 100% accurate in my experience, but basically...

I've just tried this in the game I have running now - I think it's spotted where the HFS is on my map (I don't know its exact location, but I know roughly where it is; it's not something I plan on touching any time soon, anyway) but it wasn't able to find the cave river (I do know the exact location of the chasm at the end of the cave river)

trade depot feature finder method:

Note that this DOES NOT TELL YOU WHAT FEATURE IS WHERE, it only tells you where a feature is, so if you don't already have reveal all set for your init, you will only be able to discern where stuff is, not what kind it is.

If you use your head you can get almost 100% success, and it's better than messing around with some revealer that will mess up your magma forges.

For the last fort I started, I just used reveal, then uploaded an exported revealed map to DFMA, then exited without saving.

That gives a complete, revealed map of your embark area in its unsullied state, which is readily accessible and fairly easy to navigate.

Both listed depot techniques work.

Since I generally play on a 2x2 or 3x3 map, I just have to remember which corner the magma pipe was in.  But the depot trick does help.  Wonder if that'll be fixed in the next release.

I <3 the map export + DFMA method, though. It allowed me to cook up a general floor plan in my head.

It also made me giddy to realize there was a wealth of precious metals at my embark site. Glory!

WARNING: HFS Spoilers in map

I can't believe I played my previous fort for 30 years. I also can't believe how lucky I got, the world has lots of living, healthy megabeasts left. (Though also entirely too many giants. I hate giants. I'm so tired of being asked to kill giants. Why not send me after a GCS or a bronze colossus? Something tougher than a grizzly bear?)
