Soil Composition
« on: October 28, 2002, 08:58:00 pm »

I've finished the basic soil composition.  I didn't add any new materials yet, so the soils are all very exotic.  Here is an example:

Soils can be made out of any mineral class material.  Right now it uses durability to decide what forms the material can take (the choices are now dust, pebbles, solid, and crystal).  Things like steel crystals pop up -- there needs to be a new material variable to outlaw these (at least in normal universes).

Now I'm going to start the travel interface.  Once I'm done with that, the basic elements I wanted to add will be in.  Then I need to go back and do some cleaning, and add some promised frills (like crushing things -- this will mostly be crushing dirt clods into dirt for now).

Yea... steel needs to be made into a subset of iron or something...
or iron + process (which we talked about before..)
most things DO form crystals.. under the right circumstances...
the... likelyness to form crystals comes from a materials specific heat i think..
the slower things cool.. the more likely that the atoms/molecules will have a chance to slide "into place" and form a crystal...

i suppose it IS possible that steel could be formed naturally.. just very unlikely..
it would get called something wierd..
like mithril.. or adamantine..
hehe

Steel is steel, even if found in nature... If steel would be found in real life world in the nature then we wouldnt call it Mithril or Adamantium (or whatever!), we would call it steel and then spend some few hours making a theory on how it was made naturally then we would use the steel to make forks and cars!!! But steel in crystal shape would make the scientist confused... Please make crystal steel forbidden!

I was actually refering to how early blacksmiths would react to a hunk of steel in those times...
Iron was pretty hard to work.. but if you gave them a lump OR CRYSTAL (cuz Iron can form crystals... Steel could do.. in the right conditions) of steel they would at first think that it was iron..
but when working it they would find that its a lot harder and has different properties...
thus they might tend to think of it as some completely different kind of material even though its the same ELEMENT...
so what i am saying is...
the stories about Mithril and Adamantine...
probibly come from the first time people ever figured out steel...
if it were naturally occuring.. then people probibly WOULD come up with some name for it..
given that it was rare and such...

In the world im doing for my RPG(the paper-and-pen one)Adamantite(also known as Adamantium for those who read marvel comics...remember it means "as hard as diamond")has these charatteristics:

Adamantite:
is EXTREMELY RARE!
is immune to ALL acids and does not rust
is completely isolant
is immune to radiation
is immune to magic
melts at heat equal or superior to a volcano interior
is less malleable than iron
is a bit heavier than gold(density 20.0)

Also,it can be made in an alloy with Mithril, producing Mithrilite :-)

Well,in my RPG,even stone can be used by blacksmiths...just by melting it and working it..it's easy, see? And i even put "asbestos"as a fantasy material...course,wearing asbestos armor is good for fighting dragons...but BAD for your health,on the long run!

Ha,by the way,im sending you the new stock material file with Mithril and Adamantite :-)

HOw could a blacksmith work adamantite when the melting point would be fatal for them to be near??  Just walk into the volcano to make a sword..?

It's pretty heavy.  Maybe you are supposed to drop it on people, although I'd have no idea how to mine it if the picks keep breaking.

Is magic traditionally involved in all of the processes?

In most stories i've read, Adamantite is almost always alloyed with something else because it's too heavy. Mithril is also alloyed often, not because of weight but of it's rarity.

IIRC, Adamantite was mined in as a "clay", then worked into the metal it was to be alloyed with. Once forged it's impossible to recycle the metal.

Of course, with magic anything is possible.

Well... No metal will be able to withstand the ultimate power of the Spelguru-Metal!!! It will be 51 harder than diamonds and it will be immune to acid, lava, dragon flames, really acidic acids, rust and all magic! At least it will be once I stop being so lazy and actually try to create it  :D
