For the large scale mechanics like we use in DF, stone would be just fine for mechanisms.  Yes stone is brittle, but a lot of it is very strong - it will hold a lot of weight.  Brittle and breakable are not directly linked.  Diorite, for example, would be very good for mechanisms, even small ones.
