Drowning Carp

I am new to the game, but I saw a lot of storys and so on about the oh so dangerous carp - they seem to just drown for me...

If a fish is exposed to air for any length of time it will drown.

Well then the bug is carp spawning outside of the river. I was the only thing around that had hands/ was live and I got the message after going onto the map from Travel mode, no carp remains of any sort where found outside of the river.
