Ah, but I don't really have anything to add to that thread. I just didn't want that topic to derail this thread.

"Yes, I agree, Oregon Trailing is cool, but should be optional. Let's discuss it in detail here, instead of over there.

Um,

...

I like pickles."

I seem to have developed a self defeating solution, as this discussion is now derailing the thread.

I'd like to be able to build monasteries. Various religions have needed these for various reasons over the centuries, and I'd be a fun change of pace, to have a city populated entirely by warrior monks, or even pacifist priests.

I have no idea how that would work, since we don't yet have any religion at all, but it would be cool if it could be made to happen. What a religion stands for could have a huge impact on what it's monks do. Would the church of a god of trade even have monks? A god of slaughter and torture? What kind of monks would a fertility god have? Would "monk" even come close to being the right word?

I'm no great student of religions and their organization, but i'm fairly certain that different religions have different definitions of "monks" and what they do. I'm thinking of tebetan shaiolin monks compared to midieval european monks, mostly.

Also, i'm for most of the ideas in this thread. What's really cool is thinking about how much closer this stuff will be by v1... *stares off into the distance* whenever that comes along...

Those two would be the easiest to rationalize. How do you build a system that creates sensible dwarven monks and codes of conduct for them, from any possible sphere?

"Monk" implies a certain degree of asceticism and celibacy. Would a fertility god ask such a thing of his monks? Does it depend on the fertility god in question?

you would want some room for variance within a sphere, but you wouldn't want the monks of Armok to be pacifists or to oppose slavery.
