A fire hose and a screw pump.
« on: February 01, 2009, 07:27:43 am »

A fire hose coupled with a screw pump is an ideal machine to:

muddy tiles for farming and no need for the bucket chain.
attack a fire breating dragon, lava man and fire imp.
hose down a siege ladder and attacker.
save your wooden fortress form a forest fire ;D
used for obsidian farming.

The down side, the fire hose is only invented in 1637 :'(
So any chance to get it?
(You could make a fire hose from five a leather hides and a metal fire nozle)
And create the fortress fire brigade?  ::)

Can you include pipes?

They do the same thing, but they are set and you can pass through them.

Yes and no. ;D

Pipes are stationary and could have a high presure and water flow amount.
And a hose is only flexible and will have a low flow pressure amount. (Made of simple materials no space tech)
It is easier to get a fire hose from the wall and water a new farmplot Than that you have to place a pipe per tile for the pump to the farm plot.

@ Foa it depends on the quality, pressure and material of the pipe and the hose. High quality pipe and a high pressure in the pipe will burst the fire hose. So you need to regulate the flow pressure of the pump to the hose. So yes and no. It is a design, gameplay choice.

Dwarf fortress would have to calculate the hose with some flexibility one hose could water a farm plot in a radius ten tiles around the pump?

And if it is possible to tell a dwarf to only water the farm area with 1/7 water is would make farming in the beginning of dwarf fortress much easier. ;D
