I think loading up on multiple arrow stacks, of different types, to haul them, is all well and good.

However if I look in that dwarf's inventory I want to see -kobold bone bolts-[25] and +steel bolts+[1], not bolts[26].

If that -Kobold bone bolts-[25] is actually two stacks of bolts by two different dwarves, I don't care, if that's what it takes to get them stacked.

I don't see stacking unlike objects as a way to solve the "copper arrow[1](hauled)", problem. This probably stems from us having very different ideas about what the word stack means, in this context.

Temperature is another important point. You don't want dwarves stacking wooden arrows with steel arrows, that are hot enough to ignite wood. That's extreme of course, but there's lots of ways this could come up.

But what if I just want to see bone bolts[25] when it's all sorts of +bolts+, -bolts- and bolts from all sorts of creatures? I don't see what's the problem you have with having the generic 'stack' as long as it's possible to drill down and see what's in it? Think of it as like when you look in your backpack as an adventurer, only it's a fistful of bolts instead of a backpack (and when it's actually in the dwarf's inventory permanently rather than because he's hauling it, they'll probably be in a quiver and won't need to be all stacked together.)

There should be the opportunity to set that in the raws somewhere, so you can say that you want to eg. see bolts sorted according to quality and material, but fat or tallow can be one big pile.
