Mesoamerica
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:01:00 am »

So, yeah.  I was just thinking about how tragically few games tap into the awesome architecture, bright coloration, and intensely bloody and mystical religion of such civilizations as the Aztecs, Mayans, Olmecs, and whatever other middle-America civilizations you can think of.

So, I was wondering if anyone could improve the list of games I am aware of that include such themes.

I remember playing the Age of Empires II expansion which provided access to Aztec and Maya civs, and there was also a little bit of that in American Conquest, but I never got a chance to play as them, since I only played the demo(s).

Please note that I consider the "inspired" Cuotl faction from Rise of Legends to be a valid addition.  Again, I haven't played as them.  Damn me and my padlocked wallet.

So, anyone else got some Mesoamerican appearances in games?  No restriction on game type, I just want good old-fashioned Aztec-ness.

Pnx

Medieval 2: Total war has the Aztecs in it in the very late game. You can't play as them outside of skirmish mode, though. Also, the Kingdoms expansion pack has the Americas campaign which places you as a Spanish general carving out New Spain.

Then there's the original Rise of Nations, in which the Aztecs and Maya(i think) are playable factions. I've taken over the world with the Aztecs.

Same goes for the Civilization games.

Of these, I feel that Medieval 2 has the most accurate representation of Aztec warfare. No calvary huge armies of poorly armed, lightly armored men,

Freecol, Colonization, and Civilization IV: Colonization let you play as a European nation colonizing the new world. Freecol is a freeware remake of Colonization. It's the only one of the three I've played, and the various New World nations are scattered randomly and are the same. The games are fairly simple, combat-wise, but fun for a while.

Europa Universalis 3 lets you play as any nation, and it runs from the 1399-early 1800's sometime. The colonization of the New World is fairly important, and you can play as the Incans/Mayans/Iroquois/whatever and try to stop the Europeans from colonizing the New World. The game itself plays like a fairly complex board game. I think you can find the complete edition for $10. The demo is fairly good, as far as demos go.

In Theocracy you play as the (I think) Aztecs, trying to build up your nation in preparation for when the Spanish arrive. I never got into it though.

Theocracy is good, unfortunately it isn't really sold anywhere. You will have to download it if you want to play it.

Uh...

1)  If that's technically illegal pirated software, it's off-limits for public disclosure on the boards.

2)  No way I'm downloading a 446Mb file at 7.7Kb per second.

O.K. another one you might like that possibly could be sold in your area is Settlers III where you can play as Amazons or settlers IV where you can be the Mayans.

I managed to find a demo to Theocracy.  If I think it's worth it, I may end up devoting a day or two to grabbing the full deal.  From what I've read, it sounds like distilled glory.

Y'know, Settlers never really grabbed me...  It was a long time ago since I played the demo to what I think was IV, so I may just be incapable of remembering the good parts.  I just don't remember it being all that spectacular.  What I remember was a clunky military interface, and an inability to do anything with enemy buildings (probably just a result of my ineptitude).
