Bombing fortress visitors with water
« on: January 17, 2009, 02:05:25 am »

So I did my first constructino truly following the dwarven way today:

I put up 5 windmills, connected to a set of 5 pumps on top of each other. They (pumps) started at ground level, so I pumped water up z-lvl 5.
I diverted the water into a pool at lvl 3 and 4, so two levels of water. The pool was about 10x8, and the bottom was a bridge I had setup a lever with.

I took a chain and put a kitten just under it all, and built floodgates into my own fortress, closed them and let the water splash the kitten.
*wooosh*

The kitten went like 3 or 4 tiles away from the chain position, but then returned to the chain.

Anyways, this wasn't enough to hurt the kitten. Do you know if it's possible to drown someone on ground level by supplying enough water in the "bomb"?

Anyways, good times!

You have to leave it there to give them time to drown. Could maybe use it to wash them into cage/stone/weapon traps, though.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Or off the walkway into a drowning pit several z-levels straight down... preferably filled with carp. Or drop the bastards into an enclosed cell/waiting room only one z-level down. Or whatever.

Possibilities abound.

One thing to keep in mind is that high pressure water doesn't push things, I know it doesn't make sense but I found out the hard way with my wonderful water tower pressure trap. It was supposed to push them into a nice deep pit where the water would drain away but kill my foes.

It turns out that flowing water is what pushes things, not sure how deep it needs to be though, but water 7/7 deep doesn't flow from my experience.

7/7 water just means it submerges anything on its tile. I think 5/7 and 6/7 can push objects.

I drowned a bunch of goblins on the roof of their Dark Tower once, by filling up an enormous reservoir and sending an immense amount of high-pressure water gushing into the dark tower's basement. The water filled the tower almost instantaneously and came fountaining up out of the stairways, forming a giant transitory "water pyramid" over the structure.

I imagine the reason the goblins drowned was not just that they were in 7/7 water tiles, but that the z-level above of them was also full of water. Just like how you need to extend a retractable bridge over one z-level of water to properly drown stuff trapped underneath.
