How would one go about making his own tileset?

Or character set, rather. None of the one on the wiki quite do it for me, though this one is close
, I don't like the squashed look. And I don't think any of the 12x12ers use up enough real estate (there's alot of empty magenta I mean). I just want to make it square, but when I stretch it out in paint, of course it looks messy. How could I go through it pixel by pixel and clean it up? Or if I want to take elements from another set and paste it over, how do I know that it's in the exact right place? I don't have the eyes or the steady hands to do it it seems...

400% zoom is your friend is these situations.  Alternatively, use Gimp.
