How far can a dwarf fly via bridge (and live).
« on: January 07, 2009, 10:44:54 pm »

How far can you safely bridge-fling a dwarf.
I want a military-a-pult without killing my military.
I could do a peasant test, but my for is low on worthless filth.
Any idea?
I did see a dwarf get flipped 3 squares off a 1 panel bridge once.

The problem is that bridges fling more or less randomly right now. I have plans for my current fort that involve an enclosed courtyard that divides into sperate sections (to isolate hostiles into small groups) and then uses a level above to combat drop troops in via a bridge. For that at least, I wouldn't want to go any more than one Z-level. Hopefully, super-tough champs won't experience any more than a short stun.

One Z level is more than enough, but how far on can they fly on the XY planes?

I want to bring the seige to the seige forces.
or throw cattle at them.
...Do wagons break when hit by cattle?

Alas, he means drop them into a pit, not fling them up a z-level. Unless I misread your reply, his reply, or both.

But yes, don't think of drawbridges as catapults as you could in the 2D version. Think of them more as actual drawbridges, where things on such a steep angle hop off because it won't support them anymore.

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Oh, so the length of a bridge doesn't effect how far away from the bridge they go?
I don't care about sending them up (yet), just forward.
So I guess they don't catapult far?

I don't think they take damage when flying horizontal distance when launched from drawbridge, this is mere conjecture, but I think only vertical distance is taken into account in terms of damage.

The problem with your plan will be your total inability to aim when launching things by drawbridge. The objects will take off in random directions.

When a creature collides with another creature, the creature who gets hit gets knocked over. I don't think wagons can get knocked over, and I don't think they'll be scuttled when hit by another creature.

Inability  to aim is the a the Dwarven way.
How high do Dwarves go after being catapulted?
Or do they just go flat?

Dang checked the wiki, it says 10 squares.

would aim pinpoint if I had walls on both sides?

I think you'd just smack into the walls rather than aim.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

Bridge fling (unless it's been fixed recently which I doubt) does not really work at all right now. They will move a few squares in a random direction, usually only 1 or 2. Most of the time, they just phase straight through the bridge somehow and land under it in the square they were standing on before, or one next to it. Flinging your military into action, or elves into magma, or useless clutter into the chasm is really pretty much impossible right now.

I read somewhere that it used to work much better, and that some version or another broke it and it's never been fixed, but I don't know if that's true or not - I never managed to get it to work well even in the 2d version.
