no water source and dying dwarf!
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:35:54 pm »

perhaps someone with some more experience can help me with this?

i've managed to make a thriving fortress at the south pole using harvested plants for brewing & cooking, but all the water is frozen. It never melts, ever. Now I have an injured dwarf, is there any way to get him some water?

~~If Toady is reading, perhaps in future versions, the dwarfs can take a block of ice to a furnace to turn it in to a bucket of water???~~

I've been told that injured dwarves will drink alcohol and get food on their own if they have nowhere to sleep. Otherwise, you can melt ice with magma running below it.

I've read that you can collapse the ice to melt it, provided you've got more than one lair of ice that is.. What you have to do is leave the top layer alone and then drop the next lvl(s) of ice into a hole in the ground and it'll melt.

Or a "Melt [any rock]" at the furnace; buckets of molten granite ftw. It could even be used to artificially create magma.

Good luck getting the rock that hot, and then somehow keeping it that hot while carrying it around in a bucket.

I ended up doing this to generate water on an ice map, and after some bugs, I finally got it working:

wtf it actually worked!
right after i did it, it appeared to just drop the ice in the pit, so i gave up. then later i stumbled on the same part of the map and found the pit full of deep blue water, which let me zone it as "water source". hoorah
thanks!
