[40d+] Corpses in Refuse Piles Spout Miasma

I thought the whole point of the refuse pile was so that refuse didn't generate miasma.

Wrong, you're thinking of coffins.

Aside from those, the only way to prevent miasma is to keep corpses outside.

I'm guessing the reason you're only just noticing that it doesn't prevent them from stinking up the joint is because you've almost always kept your refuse piles outside until now?

The World Without Knifebear — A much safer world indeed.
regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

I'm pretty sure I've had indoor "everything" refuse piles before.

As far as I know, refuse piles are helpful in keeping all the miasma spewing gibblets in one spot, and if the pile is sectioned off along with a pair of double doors, miasma shouldn't have a chance of spreading into your main fort areas.

Only food stockpiles seem to stop rotting.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Only food stockpiles seem to stop rotting.

Some food items in food stockpiles still rot. Slowed down if in barrels.

Quote
Most items are not subject to wear when stored in stockpiles, inside, notably prepared meals, drinks and plants. Some items, in particular plants and cooked meals, will still rot when lying around outside of stockpiles, in workshops, or, worse, in water.

Storage in barrels will delay wear both in and out of stockpiles.

Some food, specifically uncooked meat, fish, and clothes are still subject to wear when stored in stockpiles. Wear of barrelled meat or fish will set in roughly 2 seasons after butchering or arriving at the area with traders, increasing by roughly one level per season. Raw fish will instead rot.

Mangled food can still be cooked, seemingly without quality loss, although the value of the prepared food will be calculated using the reduced value of the ingredients.
