Suggestion Compendium
« on: April 27, 2009, 12:53:08 am »

I have come to realize that I have been creating a topic for each idea I have which is a jackass thing to do and, as such will be posting my ideas here.

Sorry about that.

Military Autonomy:

I'd like to see some kind of feature that makes dwarf squads stay kind of together. I've had squads
get annihilated because the squad members move at such a different speed that one gets there ahead of everyone else and dies, then another, etc.

Also would like to see some kind of feature that, even if a squad is standing down, if a hostile or invader unit is uncovered, the squad will go kill it.

That would be cool.

Dwarven Pressure Chamber
« Reply #1 on: April 27, 2009, 12:58:31 am »

Some kind of structure into which something can be flooded (such as magma), and then pressure applied to it to cause it to come out at a high velocity (water or magma, because everyone wants to see a magma cannon.)
Or you could put dwarfs or goblins or kobolds or cats or whatever and compact them into a cube.

Yeah, a lot of your ideas don't need their own threads, and most already have threads discussing them.   I recommend reading the devnotes to see the sort of things that are planned.

You've got a good point about the squads, no matter how many times the point might have already been made.

I'll just add for the record that marching could be a skill.

In an effort to cure my ignorant jackassery I have spent the last few hours reading the dev notes. I stopped after the bloats and I believe that unless there is something in the power goals, that I still have a couple of ideas that haven't been covered, or at least were only kind of glazed over in a general fashion.

Convalescent Care: Dwarfs with broken bones etc. take a long time to recover on their own. This could be helped by a new job assignment that goes beyond just recovering a broken dwarf and putting him in a bed and bringing him water and food. Setting broken bones, providing splints, bandages, antiseptic and etc to help fight against the new incoming infections and diseases. And to the contrary, if a dwarf with a broken bone does not recieve proper care, it may heal improperly, causing disfigurement and penalties to relevant skills.

Matriarchal or Patriarchal Monarchies: Let civs have the option of leaning towards having a female-dominant society or a male-dominant society, or just a normal society.

Spawnery: Advanced animal... whatevers were covered but I thought this deserved particular attention. Running out of fish or not being able to catch enough fish is a problem that is being addressed but it could be nice to create a building in which you specify exactly what kind of fish are grown.

Armed Cowards: I don't remember reading anything specific to this effect but if a dwarf encounters a hostile and the dwarf has a weapon, say like an axe, and the hostile is all alone, like a kobold or a goblin kidnapper, it may not be as prudent to run away as to just kill the interloper.

Retroactive Claiming: The Forbid on Death order is great for preventing dwarfs from charging headlong to their death whenever your military kills a single goblin during a siege. If items that are dropped maintain some kind of memory as to who they belonged to when they were dropped, then it may be reasonable to reclaim all such items that were dropped by killed hostile invaders when you turn on "Claim other death items" order.

Quote from: ToadyOne
03/20/2009: After a brief period of the doctor walking up to our injured dwarf, looking at himself and deciding that nothing was wrong, the medical staff were further educated. Then the doctor went off and grabbed the wooden splint and properly fastened it on the patient's right lower arm. The dwarf left the hospital and mined out a passage with the pick in his left hand.

Next up is 40d10. There's quite a bit left to do with health care, but the correct treatment today means that much of the rest should flow by pretty quickly. I might still get a chance to work with it a bit in the next few days. Either way, the underground's still up for April.

Having read the dev notes is excellent.  Just take a few more minutes to skim over the List of Remaining Items, which covers military autonomy and convalescence thoroughly, and matriarchies/patriarchies to some extent:

Health Care
# New setup for hospital
# Realigning of compound fractures and traction
# Sutures for open wounds
# Use of soap to clean patients
# Surgery to remove rotten tissue
# Dressing wounds with bandages
# Splints
# Crutches
# Plaster casts
# Soldiers able to perform basic first aid
# Separate out feeding of patients as a job
# Medical information and chief physician appointment

Entity Positions
# Respect gender/caste for generated position holders [this means that you could make it so only men can be priests, only women can be mayors, etc.)

Squads
# Formations

Auto-Melt Non Usable Metallic Items: This is probably considered to be inclusive in one of the notes I read in about how to deal with stuff that invaders drop. Anyway, setting this order would claim and take all metallic objects that invaders drop that are not wearable by the race being played and melt them down.

Head Stones: I read something about cause of death so I thought it would be cool if masons could create headstones or something comparable for tombs to describe the dwarf, maybe how he/she died, what they accomplished in life, etc.

Smooth as you Mine: I saw something in the dev notes about separating Engraving from Smoothing.
Maybe make smoothing a skill in the same category as mining and allow miners to smooth as they mine out rock?

Designating tasks to multiple dwarfs: Some tasks, such as sand collection could be designated to many dwarfs instead of just 1.
