Dwarves FM [Flavour Mod project WIP]
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:27:46 pm »

Hey there to ye!

I feel urge to start a new "global" mod but this time I don't want to rape DF universe that much... I mean, I had Middle-Earth mod, Forgotten Realms mod, even Fallout mod... But this time I go another way!

I was mainly inspired by the thread and the fact that people don't know the real look of a kobold freightened me...
So I start from kobolds but dig deeper. I want to make gameplay more funny flavour-wise and the first step is to differentiate races by equipment and other stuff.

Flavour Mod kobolds.

They look as they should:

And they carry various bug-related equipment.

My first steps.

"Real looking kobolds":

A common kobold inventory:

Fat Oppressed Goblins :)
I make a new character set and try to make goblins this way: they were once close to small humans (gnomes maybe), leading various life and having grudges and friendships with other races. But demons considered they can become good slaves so their race transformed into ugly creatures which cannot die to serve their masters. They started to build obsidian towers for their lords and harrass the land to get as much as they can for their greedy masters. Demons don't consider their life to have any value so they send packs of them to attack fortified settlements to find a sure death, just for demon's amusement. In rare occasions when no demon controls a goblin tribe it may even become peaceful to other races. But still they are too corrupted to become good-mannered again.
This race wears terrifying helms, sometimes rusty or broken but still somewhat sturdy. They give their weapons names and decorate them in macabre manner.
Here's a character set I'm working on:

P.S. The child and the baby are from Sphr's set. I just can't think of a better way to draw them: they are perfect :).

The multiposting is intentional for upcoming content. For now I want you to share your thoughts which weapons/items should each race have.

I'm very interested in your approach to elves. I am already expecting "branch" weapon (yeah, since their items are made of wood this makes sense) but what less obvious but still very fitting for them will you suggest?
For sure various types of jewelry... They are fancy bastards... What more?

Also suggestions on dwarves' armor types/weapons are welcome. I eager to go smash someone with my "keg hammer".

Spitting tube is a koboldish weapon to spit hairy bugs :). And it's smaller and weights less of course.

You should have elven geezers that beat people with sticks!
But I don't quite get the tone of the mod, is it serious or wackey?

The main intention is to make it more "flavourful" (read: more diverse races and creatures).
To be honest modmaking became a kind of "game" for me so I make it mostly for myself (and I hope that someone will like it too).
Some wakey things may take place, since once finished with races I will turn on creatures. Expect giant amphibious carp megabeasts... Although I won't go as far as "giant firebreathing chicken", I'd like to stay more serious :).

Toady's goblins are grey, as evidenced in Slaves to Armok 1.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Ouch. I should fix it... Although it means a lot of recoloring... But wait, it's a pity they don't wear COPPER armor. Gray armor, gray skin etc. Some work though...
Thank you, Untelligent.

P.S. And yeah, definitely "spirit of nobledwarf" creatures in magma. They should be in.

I was inspired by a thread on whips.

I am going to combine MACE and HAMMER skills into a single MACE skill for all the bashing weapons. It makes some sense but the main reason is to make whips to use HAMMER skill (and renaming all races' hammermen to lashers) thus a local hammerer will hit prisoners with a whip and not a hammer. This will lead to much smaller death rate.

Getting a bit close to an argument about realism in DF here.

But.. why not batch hammers and axes as one thi..

Oh, I see what you mean.. never mind.

Actually I've transferred these goblins and kobolds to DFComplete mod. And I skipped idea with lashes for a while. Maybe I will made it optional. Dwarves-killing hammerer is too cool to nerf ))).
