not enough fire
« on: January 02, 2008, 03:13:00 pm »

they invented the wheel, mechanized pumping, complex traps, and many other advanced technological wonders

and yet the only way to have any kind of fire in the game is if a dragon shows up at your house.

being able to build a fire in any number of forms, hopefully at least 1 transporteable form (like a torch or an oil lamp) would be a very fun tool for fort defense, execution, art, elf taunting, added danger, traps, etc

why is it so hard to get fire?

oh yeah:

"he he"

I don't think the game can quite handle torches yet, as the hand carrying a !!torch!! would quickly become a !!hand!! as there isn't a way to say "this part is burning, that part isn't and isn't flamable."

the torch itself wouldn't necessarily need to be !! on fire, perhaps a container of a !!fire!! object, or an oil lamp would work, if made out of steel or iron or something

I believe a lighting system is in the works.  Once that's in, it makes sense they'd include rules for torches and whatnot.  Maybe even bonfires and fireworks, and my favorite: exploding ballista bolts...  Bronze Colossus?  bring em on!

Complex traps...Spread some of that rum along the entrance tiles...drop a match when the traders come...the elven traders of course...and unleash those caged demons! Everyone, get your flaming elf chunks! Elf chunks! Get 'em while they're hot!

So, you burn all the elven traders goods too? They are mostly wood and fruit...

This'll go in when the lighting arc happens.   No need to fret.

I would like to see fireworks.  I have no idea how they'd implement them though.  Any fireworks are going to look like they're going off on the ground.  Maybe sparklers and ground-level things like those crazy spinning discs and fountains that shoot sparks 2-3 z-levels high.

And of course, Dwarven Grenadiers and Demomen...

goblin leader: "The Dwarves must be desperate, they're throwing their ale barrels at us!  We have them now!"
goblin lieutenant: "Hey, are those barrels on fire?  Oh sh--"
