Eating priority
« on: March 28, 2009, 04:29:05 pm »

I'm getting really frustrated by my dwarves eating the snakes and maggots I'm trying to extract from. The eating AI should probably go for prepared meals over ingredients over vermin. As is, it does the exact opposite it would seem

Wouldn't hurt if tame maggots could be milked

True, but they wouldn't be dwarfs if they didnt eat Vermin.

also, tame maggots SHOULD be able to be milked, but i believe its a programming oversight.

They are able to be milked, its just that while the milker is on his way to get a barrel, another dwarf will come along and snatch the maggot from the cage, leading to a job cancellation.

Yeah, it's pretty widely attested that dwarves will often prioritize caged untamed vermin for eating.  A predilection for eating live lizards is so weird that I kind of suspect Toady meant to do the exact opposite -- make caged vermin a last-resort food source just like the uncaged ones that dwarves chase when they're starving -- and then he dropped a negative somewhere.

This. DF is not Dungeon Keeper. Your dwarves have personalities, they do what they want to do in most of the cases. You are just giving basic orders, but this won't prevent a military dwarf to go to sleep during a siege.  ;D This "system" is pretty cool imo.

Pilsu is not saying that these priorities should be subject to the player's preference, but rather that the dwarves' preferences should be more rational and consistent.  Sure it's okay to have the occasional dwarf who likes scarfing down live rats, but right now dwarves aren't even smart enough to pick the meal that will give them a happier thought.  THAT's the problem.

Vermin eating as a whole could use some work eventually. A single cockroach is enough to fill a dwarf's stomach and doesn't produce unhappy thoughts if he doesn't have to catch it himself. I'd expect some civs to have qualms about eating rat stew, overridden by personal preferences. A single serving of whatever vermin dinner should take more than one unit of roaches or rats. Some things like butterflies shouldn't even be edible

For now, I'd be happy if they stopped eating my liquid fire materials

I once had my whole fortress hunting for vermin, starwing and thristing to death, ignoring my miraculous stockpiles of plump helmets, roasts and wine...
I dont do megaprojects since then.
Anyway I think its a... rather good idea, but it should be a little bit more.. personalized
