[38c] Magma pool with no magma?
« on: March 22, 2008, 01:44:00 pm »

Not sure if this is really a bug, but it was a big disappointment!

While digging my usual main stairwell I got the "You have discovered a magma pool!" message.  But all I'd really found was a big round obsidian room 1 z-level high with no magma.  Cute and and interesting find, but I'd rather have had the magma...

I assume that isn't a bug,  If it isn't connected to an actual vent.  and is like... a Bubble.  It is very possible it cooled before you found it, thus turning it into obsidian.  (I think 2 or more Z-level magma would stick as magma.)

In that case, the bug would be that he got a report of finding magma when there actually wasn't any. Seems like the simplest fix would be to just ensure that the magma is at least two z-levels deep, so that it's guaranteed to persist until disturbed.

Or change the [discovery message] to "You've found a cooled magma pool! What a pity." or "You've found an obsidian cave!"

If you're in a glacier or something like that, the answer's kinda simple.  All the magma froze.

Magma magically generates its own heat now, so that shouldn't have been the problem.  I've also found a water pool in the past with this issue (Bug 636).  I'm not sure what's going on.  Depth seems to be set correctly in advance, so it's possibly a messier issue.  I'll fold this report into the previous bug.

Did you dig down a level?

I've had the same problem.  Dug channels into the obsidian and got... more obsidian.    :(

I think it makes the magma pool, but the top layer is always empty so that you can put magma forges there.  And then it forgets to put the next layer, which is the actual magma.  I was terribly disappointed.

Forcing 2 or more z-levels of magma would solve this, as would a different message for the 1-level 'pool.'

It should already be forcing the proper number levels.  There's a bug of some kind.

I reclaimed the fortress and dug out the layer under the pool room and it was all microcline, not obsidian, and it's not a freezing map.. the nearby stream is running just fine. FOI  :)

[40d] Underground pool with no water
« Reply #10 on: December 24, 2008, 04:28:45 pm »

FWIW I just got the "you have discovered an underground pool" which contained a paltry 2 tiles of murky pool in a roughly 25x25 cavern.  No other water source, entrance or exit is present.  Maybe it dried up, but this is only the second autumn.  The expected baddies (snakemen, olmmen, cave spiders, etc...) are there in force.
