Confusing new map, can't get off the hill.
« on: December 24, 2008, 06:26:19 pm »

Okay my dwarfs started on floor level, but they seem trapped on a hill.

So the level below that is:

He dug the stairs, but nobody goes through it. What is wrong with it?

Strange thing is they actually started on the level on the first picture, I got one dwarf to dig rooms and all. But when I ordered someone to finish it, they can't reach it anymore because they're all on top of the hill. Anyone can see what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance! :)

This may be be seeing things, but I think your stairs are messed up.

It should be..

......
......
..<.. Top level.
......
......

......
......
..>< Lower level.
......
......

> = Up stair.

< = Down stair.

In other words, make sure the Up stair is DIRECTLY beneath the down stair.

If you see the uphill and downhill ramps, compared to the stairs, you can see they're directly above each other...

You made a downstair where there should have been an up or up/down stair.

you've got a down stair on the bottom level.

Imagine it like this from a side view
(note, not to scale, eg, each layer isn't a real z level layer)
/ are stairs, # is solid rock
Code: [Select]
__ __ <--- this is the z level your dwarves are on
##/##
## ## <--- this is the z level that you wanted dug out
##/##

That's whats wrong. to fix it? next to the stair that's wrong, designate an up stair to be dug. above it, designate another down stair.

Yep that was it, thanks I see it now.

Do they actually need those stairs though? I swear I just saw a dwarf coming directly off the slopes of the hill. ??? :P

The arrows around the hills are basically ramps. So they can use them to go up and down. Since you designated the walls around the stairs to be mined out, including the outside, the dwarves will go down the hill and dig those out.

You dwarves are far from trapped. However, the stairs you made on the top level are useless unless you construct Up-Stairs (b-C-u), but why bother if you're just going to be mining in from the side? I'd just channel out the stairs you currently already dug (unless you have plans for the Down-Stairs on the bottom level. You could dig out Up-Stairs below them if you want to make the dwarves dig deeper from there.)

Yea I see you're right now, the reason they didn't get off the hill to continue to mine. Was because they couldn't reach the area I designated them to, so they didn't even bother to get off their place. I have no plans with the area I have posted screenshots of yet, I basicly just move them to another much bigger hill to build holes in.
