Sleeping
« on: December 25, 2008, 07:05:27 am »

So I have my current fort running a while, I'm up to 69 dwarfs and even though each dwarf has a 4x4 smoothed stone bedroom with engravings, containing a bed, chest, and chair, my stupid dwarfs are sleeping in hallways and in the jail!  All the beds have been made bedrooms and then assigned to a specific dwarf...I don't get it.  Are my dwarfs just dumb?  Am I missing something?  They used to use the rooms...Weird.

Those dwarves who are sleeping on the floor are hunters? Hunters tend to do weird things like those... :)

Do you have economy going?

They might not be able to afford your glorious rooms.

Here you go:
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Economy

"Bedrooms may now only be assigned to those who can afford it. Nobles and legendary dwarves pay no rent, and so may be assigned any room; all others will pay rent on their current room and, if they cannot pay, will be evicted and must find a cheaper place to sleep. Make sure you have enough low-price rooms available (or at least beds in the barracks). The rental price can be seen when selecting the room with q; this figure is based on the total worth of furniture, smoothing and decoration, etc. in that room."

Protip: Never ever mint coins. The economy runs fine on credit.

someone on IRC a while ago mentioned building a casino for his dwarfs.  build a bunch of unlinked levers, and set them to repeat pull.  dwarfs earn $5 a pull, and suddenly everyone can afford their rooms.

I usually just have a really nice baracks that they can sleep in for free.

No Economy yet.  They are not hunters.  (Not the main guys anyway)

There are 3 main dwarfs the engraver a farmer and miner.  But the jail always has people sleeping in it.  And according to the sheriff no criminals.  I've now tried moving their rooms to another level, but they still don't go there to sleep.  Watching the engraver, he will walk right past his room, up two levels of stairs and sleep in the jail or in a hallway if there are already two dwarves in the jail.

I've just had my first ambush, which thankfully only killed a new hunter which no one has seemed to miss.  The other two hunters wiped out 6 or 7 goblins. (I lucked out by having the three hunters heading out over the bridge at the same time. :->) So now I have to go figure out the military.

This is awesome. They actually earn a living at the "casino"...
Hmm... where would this fit on the wiki? *goes to look*

Heh, casino. I would put one of those in if I could make it randomly kill one of the gamblers. I imagine thats how dwarven casinos would work.

Anyways, have you checked the obvious? Like, the doors aren't locked and theres nothing blocking their paths and whatnot?

You're not really playing slot machines until you're playing high stakes slot machines.
