[40d] Killed tame animals not butcherable
« on: December 19, 2008, 02:14:51 pm »

Did some searches but couldn't find this reported anywhere.

So, I've noticed that tame animals (not pets) that are killed by anything OTHER then the butcher workshop are not butcherable. This seems like a waste. If goblins decide to kill off a few of my cows, I really ought to be able to get the meat and leather from them. Perhaps every killed animal that isn't a pet and is butcherable in the raws should act like a hunter kill.

I had this exact same problem and reported it, but this was a version or so ago and I haven't seen it in this one. I don't think I've had animals killed by goblins, but I've had wild animals killed by trader guards and traps butchered with no problems at all.

Not a bug.

Likely those animals have [BUTCHERABLE_NONSTANDARD] tag, which means that if they aren't butchered by the butcher then you can't butcher the corpse.

But these are basic farm animals. Cows and horses and stuff. Things I BREED to butcher. It makes no sense that a cow killed by me I can butcher but a cow killed by a goblin arrow can't be butchered.

They aren't former pets either?  Yeah, that does seem like a bug.

I have to third or fourth the opinion that this is a bug.  As long as the cow hasn't gained a name by killing enemies of the fortress it should be butcherable no matter how it died.

I would go so far as saying that since age isn't displayed anywhere for animals the dwarves should even butcher them when they die of old age.  If age were displayed then I would think it would be up to the player to butcher animals while they are in a healthy age.
