farming: what does "0/1 ft" mean?
« on: February 14, 2008, 11:42:00 pm »

My plots were all 0/1 ft.  Then, I heard that irrigation increases yield, so I built an irrigation system (spawning a few bug reports because I'm an idiot and repeatedly got dwarves trapped).  Now, it says 0/26 ft.

What does this mean?  It's not mentioned in 'farm plot' or 'farming' on the wiki.

Yield has gone up a bit (instead of 0/1/2/3 bushes, I get 1/2/3/4 bushes), but I have no real reason to believe it's the irrigation rather than the skill of my farmers having improved.

Side note: a 10x10 plot of quarry bushes makes a TON of food.  But, the dwarves' new wagons means they still bought all my roasts.  OTOH, I turned a ton of crops into a ton of steel armor.

Look at wiki, farming->increasing yield. I wrote it yesterday.

ft is not irrigating, but fertilisation, You need to command your dwarves to fertilize field with potash. 0/26 means, that you'll need 26 units of potash to fully fertilize field, and not a single wone was used so far.

Ah, ok.  I saw your section, but it didn't mention this; I just added it.

Does irrigation do anything then?  Other than let the plot accept 26x as much fertilizer?

I flooded some 0/1 yellow sand farms and they jumped, after a short while submerged, to 0/8.  I haven't really noticed a difference in output, though; all it seems to have done is make my people spend more time lugging potash to the farms.

Rather than increasing the yeild of each crop, it may just increase the number of times you can plant a crop on that field each year.

A few times I extensively farm a field from the moment it says that it is now spring and by the time I get to the end of autumn it refuses to let me grow anything in that field.

I never fertilized my farms and still with a single max size farm plot, my 150 dwarves fortress is swimming in syrup.

The mechanism for that is that the crop must be able to grow within its growing period, or else it won't be planted.  Has nothing to do with intensiveness.

Irrigating is what makes it possible to fertilize.

It seems only muddied tiles may be fertilized, even if they're soil tiles. If you tried to fertilize when it said 0/1, the dwarves wouldn't respond to the command.

I thought fertilizing only worked on outdoor crops?

Fertilizer makes you get more plants per stack then you otherwise would. With legendary growers you get 5 max plants, I've seen up to 8 per stack if I use fertilizer. Unfortunately you have to fertilize once per season so it's generally not worth the time and effort (though stacks of 160 dwarven syrup roasts sure are nice).

Just FYI I have never used fertilizer in my life and had a [6] stack of Plump Helmets in my current fort.

yes I forgot about that, 6 is possible if you have very skilled growers but it's pretty rare. 5 is the highest you will usually see. I remember (now) participating in a thread a while back where someone else mentioned getting 6 without fertilizer too so it's even more embarrassing :-[

I guess that means more then 8 might be possible with fertilizer + highly skilled growers, I rarely farm so I don't know for sure 8 is just the most I ever saw when I messed with fertilizer for a while.
