Why not turn off cave collapses? That way your artificial island could be anywhere. Imagine goblin siegers loitering twenty z levels below you! Set up a farm and you'd be all set for food and booze, no need for a military and it'd be safe (hah) so no accidents so no need for a well... you wouldn't even need to pilot the fortress at this point. Just make sure to have enough people set for farming and booze production, and you'd be able to leave the computer and come back when the last of that generation has died, set new farmers/brewers, then repeat for infinite years.

The problem with that is: No material => No walls, no beds, no weapons, no legendary dining room, nothing! => Unhappy dwarves, insecurity.
You're dwarven and you probably want to build something. Just letting them live on booze and food, doing nothing else, will quickly become very boring. And if anything goes wrong, you'll lose. Unless all your food and booze is masterwork quality, you'll have a problem. They sleep on the floor, eat on the floor and there isn't a "dining room effect". If a strange mood fails (and they probably WILL), there will be dead dwarves and definitely a tantrum spiral.
Besides: How do you want to build barrels for the booze? And how should the food stay fresh?
I'll still prefer the natural obsidian island. It's much more dwarven. xD

[...]and built floor tiles cannot be irrigated. So, no farming [...]

Why does everybody keeps writing that? I am mostly positive, that floor tiles, that were constructed CAN be irrigated. 2 forts earlier i built a fortress in the middle of a steep mountain cliff. I added a huge platform on a pillar at one side, that i fed with water from a pump tower (holy moly, that was alot of work) and drained it through the hollow 3x3 pillar into an aqueduct, that lead almost directly back to the river.... yeh, i was kind of over-the-top with that...

but most importantly: flooding the constructed floor left muddy floor pieces, on which i could build farms, that were actually yielding outdoor crops nicely.

i swear to whom it may concern, i am speaking nothing but the truth. (no, i don't have the save. all i have is an extracted map for that 3d viewer...

I believe you, I built a (temple) out of wood above the y-junction of two rivers. I used buckets (from above) to muddy the floor, and got a nice crop of outdoor plants.

I shut the door and my guys lived happily for a few years.

Constructed? Then it will

Use obsidian mountain instead.

well after talking with a friend of mine we came up with three ideas

1) doing it on the downmost level, you build everything then carve everything so the water from the ocean/river comes in

2)doing it laaaarge through the levels, then you carve the rest out and let the water come in from the ocean/river

3) make a regular island built of whatever the hell you wanted (this cant be cut off from the continent unleess you use a complex systemp [wich would rock btw])
