Actually, I've found that it's already possible to define bedroom walls with statues.  When you define a room from a bed, statues act just like walls in that they stop the expanding flashing X's.

It's a fairly expensive process to replace a bunch of walls with statues, but I've found that even "finely crafted" regularly rock statues can greatly improve a room's quality.  I have a 2x3 bedroom with two statue walls and not-so-impressive furniture cluttering the tiny space and no detailing classified as "decent".  The House Fer rep is plenty happy with it.

I do the same already as well. I have read that statues block water as well (but have not personally tested it.)

My main point is to make statues (if they are not already) SUPPORTS as well as decorative/blocking, that way you can completely remove walls without having to put in supports (for preventing cave-ins) AS WELL AS statues (for the new walls.)

Another thing to note is that not being able to smooth ore/gem walls can actually go beyond just an aesthetic thing, and actually impact gameplay, since you can only carve fortifications in smoothed walls. I like to dig "trap tunnels" with fortifications to lure invading goblins in, then pepper them with bolts before they can get to the main city proper. One of my biggest pet peeves is carving out said trap tunnels, only to discover that I've hit a vein and can't carve the fortifications I wanted.

If rewalling really messes with the game mechanics, then I'd at least like to see the ability to smooth ore/gem veins. Even if it destroys the goodies within, it'd be worth it IMO.
