Selectable era
« on: August 20, 2007, 01:49:00 pm »

There have been lots of suggestions from people who want magic, who don't want magic, who want gunpowder and who don't want it, who want steamtech, etc... I rather like DF as a very open-ended game that everyone can enjoy in their own way, and I thought perhaps all these desires can be reconciled somehow?

For lack of a better title I set "selectable era" because my initial idea was to have things like gunpowder and steamtech etc. appear in different eras. That way you could start with a "primitive" era, that gives way to a "magical" era, that blends into a "gunpowder" era that opens the field for a "steamtech" era, or what have you.

But then I thought of everyone who might want, say, steamtech AND magic but NOT gunpowder, or what have you...

I don't have any good ideas for this. Thoughts and suggestions, anyone?

This sort of thing is already planned for the distant future.  I can't find it on the devpages, but somewhere there's something about letting the player generate worlds of different settings, varying from "standard fantasy" to "mythological" to "fairy tale" to "historical," and probably anything else the player can think of.

Maybe different races could evolve differently? For instance, humans could evolve to have gunpowder, dwarves to have steamtech, and elves to have magic?

Why not just make these options toggleable in the init file?

That's an alternative, certainly. But I feel having a setting properly manageable in-game works better than hiding it in an init file somewhere.

There's worse ways to do it of course, Firefox being one example.
