If you drop your livestock from high enough to splatter them on impact, you should get more individual bones, I think.  Alternatively, you could drop them from only high enough to knock them unconscious but drop them onto a weapon trap with 10 serrated steel disks.

That's horrible.  Be sure to save the video!

Cats. Cage the kittens, when they mature release them. Keep only 5-6 males around for breeding, and that should work fine. More bones/CPU cycle.

Alternatively, dogs.

i'm guessing dogs are the better choice, seeing as how they don't choose their owners!

Also, i've been very successful so far with just fishing. I've gotten around 300 fish bones outta the river and lakes. I forbid things like mussels that don't have bones so they don't get eaten (and thus, would be passing up a fish that DOES have bones), and i also dump hundreds of fish out of my stockpiles, so they'll quickly rot and then i'll unforbid the bones, so they'll be hauled to the nearby refuse stockpile.

unfortunately, my 4 fishers seem to have exhausted all the fishing spots except for this one lake halfway across the map. When do the fish respawn anyhow?

Funny, i imported alot of exotic fish for the purpose of getting more bones, and i found a shoe that has like 15 or more different kind of fish bone decorations on it. It was funny. i'll post a pic if anyone is interested in seeing it.

go ahead man. sounds like a slight bug, though. i was under the impression that only one type of bone would be used to decorate.  ???

No, it's normal for things to have more than one bone decoration, the bones only need to be different. Same goes for other things.

here it is, oh and i forgot to mention that this is from my pixie fort, a mod i made a while back, i really should update that.

Fish respawn, I believe, at season-change.  But not every season change.  In my fishing-heavy fort, I went years with no new fish after having repeatedly exhausted all the pools.

I do recommend the livestock option for bone-farming.  I maintain several different kinds of animal, as there's some kind of hidden breeding cap on a per-animal-type basis.

Since you don't care about the size of your bonepiles, you could slaughter the male baby animals immediately after birth, just keeping a few adult males around to impregnate the females.  Then you'll only have to slaughter adults when you've collected enough females that the breeding cap gets hit.

(I've been thinking about your project.  I find it interesting.  I'm a big fan of bone decorations.  Historical decorations made from masterful elf bone send me into paroxysms of joy...)

If you don't mind a touch of modding, you can speed up breeding significantly by adding the [liTTERSIZE:5:15] tag to your breeding animals. Sets the min and max littersize every time they give birth. 50:50 will give you 50 new animals per female per year pretty much. Note that after 50 of one specific animal, no more females of that species will get pregnant. However they will still have kids.

Just go with the tower butchery. It doesn't matter how effective it is, the thought of a cow dropping 20 meters onto several spinning steel discs is just to good to pass off.

He wants many individual stacks, not one big one. With a massive breeding speed increase, he can get lots of stacks quickly.
