One-eyed narcoleptic miner-dwarf
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:20:46 pm »

I was creating a fortress centered around glassmaking.  After quite a few tries, I finally found a site with a source of magma, sand, and suitable living conditions.  Right off the bat, I sent my two miners to find that magma, I wanted to get the glass production in full swing right away, you see.  After a bit, I managed to find the top of the pool and dug out a channel (complete with iron bars) to move some magma to a safe area.  When it came time to finish the channel and release the molten flow, however, a fire imp decided to raise its ugly head!  Upon seeing the jets of flame and smoke I immediately thought "Well, there goes the expedition," having been wiped out by a fire man in similar circumstances earlier.  Much to my surprise, however, the miners gathered up enough courage to pick the nasty little thing to death and finish their channel!

Needless to say I was quite surprised that not only did they kill the imp, but they both survived.  In their debriefing while the mason put up some walls to block the other imps, I looked over their wounds.  One managed to escape unscathed, the other didn't fare quite so well.  Minor head trauma, and the horrible little demon managed to claw out her eye!  Though I immediately constructed a bed and well for her to rest and recuperate, her head healed up at a very fast pace, and soon she seemed fine, apart from the missing eye.  She now has a problem, however, with episodes of intense pain followed by unconsciousness.  I removed all her job designations, and she refuses to stay in bed.  She passes out very frequently, but manages to get down enough food to not starve, and still drinks alcohol.  I'm wary about putting her back to work, however, due to her tendency to leave jobs half-done, by no fault of her own.

So what's the diagnosis?  Will she get better over time?  Is there a way I can force her into bedrest and heal her a bit, or am I stuck with a narcoleptic dwarf?  I don't suppose that's all that bad, I'll probably treat her like a noble and have the engravers carve legends of her epic battle with the beasts of the magma.  Maybe I'll even erect a glass tower in her honor!

As she get higher skill in mining she will probably get more points in toughness. This will decrease the frequency of her passing out.

I think she's got Phantom pain, that is if the eye is completly gone, and it will never go away.
And if you like her you shouldn't treat her like a noble, they all die horrible deaths.

-edit-
Skill in mining or not, there's 33% chance of her gaining thoughness when she gains any skill so you can let her max your bookkeeping for easy skills or other simple tasks that levels fast

I meant like a human noble, not a dwarven noble.  ;D

I'll try toughening her up a bit, thanks.

The bookkeeping's a good idea. As far as I know, no matter how bad she is she won't be able to mess up the books. Once you've hit highest, just put her as bookkeeper and she'll spend all her time going over them and if she passes out who cares? It needs to be done anyway. You could probably also let her clean or haul stone or assign a busyshop to her alone and let her make mugs or bone bolts or something when she's awake.

Would these ideas - including the bookkeeping one - work for a NO-eyed narcoleptic miner? I have the same situation here, even down to it being a fire imp that did it, but the poor miner's completely blind. Still navigates fine though; eyes don't seem to be that important for pathfinding.

having no eyes means the dwarf wont be able to see more than 1 tile around him in a square (ie touch distance) so if you keep him safe inside the fort he'll live a relatively normal life. however the poor bugger will walk straight into monsters before detecting them.

Imagine him with a white cane wandering around the fortress

*tap tap tap tap tap thwack*
Urist Mcblind:oh sorry my dear man I seem to have hit your leg.
Goblins wrestler: SMASH!
Urist McBlind hits goblin wrestler in the head with *white cane*. it is cleaved asunder.
goblin wrestler has been struck down.

A normal life except the passing out part.

I have him in the military right now so he can die a heroic death if nothing else. Of course, he never makes it to the field of battle without passing out.

She's clearly an Elf spy, or at least an Elf sympathizer, no self respecting dwarf would return from battle wounded! It's all or nothing! You either win without a hitch, or die in a blaze of glory in the name of Armok, preferably taking what killed them along for the ride. A Dwarf wounded after battle? What next, is she going to ask for Workdwarf's comp? Is she going to shave her beard and start prancing about with her ears all plucked up like those limp-wristed boy-loving elves?

I say you do what I do to all of my "friends" the Elven caravan, and have her stand guard on a drawbridge above the lava moat... At least then, she'll have gone out with the blaze of glory she deserved.

(No seriously, though, All elven caravans I've met have been dropped into my lava, or drowned in my depot... And I've never had a Dwarf survive a battle with permanent wounds... At least, not very long...)
