Can you fill a channel with rainwater?
« on: December 08, 2008, 05:03:09 pm »

Hy there (again) ,

Today's question to YOU ;) is "Can I/you/he/she/it/... fill a channel with rainwater?

1. Does it work as a pond what is slowly refilled when raining?
2. If it does not refill but you channel it to a river/brook/pond and you fill it untill 3/7 water then does it refill ?

Greetings Lucifer

Unfortunately, currently rain only does two things.

1. Generates 1/7 of water every time it hits a Murky Pool tile, which is map-generated and as such cannot be reproduced.
2. Gives dwarves an unhappy thought.

Now, if you connect the murky pool tiles - ponds - to a channel system, the channel can be filled with rainwater. However, if it spreads the water too thin, it may evaporate in the summer or otherwise be difficult to use.

Connecting a channel to a brook or river is your best bet.

Problem is I don't have  river/brook/aquifer/... just murky pools. It won't be too stretched out ;)

Evaporation is your enemy.  You can channel into the murky pool to drain it out, and then your channel will fill during rain.  I would make your storage vertical rather than horizontal to minimize evaporation.

This way water will fall to the bottom and collect, rather than spreading itself out to 1/7 depth and evaporating.  Underground should mean that you won't have to worry about evaporation during summer months, if it gets hot.  If it doesn't get hot enough to evaporate murky pools during summer, then underground is strictly optional.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

3. Give dwarves a water covering, which removes the blood/vomit covering they tend to be covered with, then evaporates leaving them clean. At least for a short while.

It used to destroy seeds left outside as well, but I think that has since been fixed.

It worked ! The channel method , I had a 4x4 murky pool and now due channeling and alot of patience I have a "water reservoire" of 6x8 :D I believe that whenever the pool is filled enough and you channel one or two tiles it becomes bigger and gets filled. This might be a way to make it extremly large/wide/deep. It could be a help for area's who don't contain alot of water but do have some pools.
