[40d] FPS very low, even with modified init
« on: December 03, 2008, 06:31:05 pm »

I downloaded 40d and flashdrove it over to my PC. I copied the folder to my desktop, and a few moments later I opened the file. I went into the data>init>init file and set it how I usually do. G FPS down to 10, weather off. I have been able to pull off maybe 30-40 FPS with this setup. But, now, (the changes are saved in the init file, nothing else has been modified) I only get about 5, at the menus. Not even a fort running. I'm sure I've done something wrong in some way, and this isn't really a bug, but maybe you guys could help out.

How about setting PARTIAL_PRINT to YES in the init? Maybe that'll bump you back up to 30-40 FPS.

For it to be that low at the main menu is indicative of a display driver problem.  I would suggest checking for updates to your display drivers.

If you are using an ATI or nVidia graphics card you might also want to check out http://www.omegadrivers.net/  The owner of the site applies specific performance and stability tweaks to the drivers; and bundles them with a cleaner installation and configuration system than the manufacturers.

I found using the new full-capability view (non-80x25) feature takes framerate down pretty linearly; I'm using only 80x35+blankspace right now instead of the 80x55 perfect fit for my monitor.

Ive just had and fixed this problem. It is INDEED a graphics driver problem.

I was running the newer ATI drivers. The menu was the same for me, barely 1 FPS in the intro.

I changed to the new omega drivers. SAME problem.

I have now reinstalled older ATI drivers, 8.453.0.0, released in january this year. This has fixed my problem.

Could it be someting in the new driver updates?

Try using DF Accelerator - http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=27262.0

It has a tendency to fix all driver-related problems. Later on it adds some new ones; YMMV.
