[40d] Ex post facto law
« on: November 30, 2008, 05:54:37 pm »

I don't know if this is a bug or anything, but it seems like a rather weird kind of justice...

It was summer and the humans came to trade.  Having loads of shell goods and no current ban on exporting shell, I bring them out to be traded.  At some point, a new mayor is elected and just before the humans leave, he changed the law to ban exporting shell goods.  There's a reason, however, the US constitution says "congress shall make no ex post facto laws"... and, unfortunately, it seems the dwarves don't share this rule.  Next thing I know, my carpenter is interrupted by a guard bashing his lights out for hauling goods to the depot before the ban was ever in place.  So, now there is a carpenter with a mangled leg because the mayor thinks ex post facto law is a good idea.

Did the ban get placed before or after the trading?

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

Yeah, it's an old bug.

# 000130 □ [dwarf mode][nobles]   export mandate violations occur even if they were made after the merchant leaves the depot

Although if you ask me, dwarven nobles acting like assholes is completely typical.

Long after... I did the trading at the beginning of the season.  Apparently it's a known bug, though...

Yes.  As noted by post #3 where it lists it as bug 130.

Would the noble or hammerer punish themselves if they had carried the goods to the depot before the ban?

(I haven't played for a while so can't remember if nobles or hammerers carry goods to the depot, but I'm pretty sure the mayor can.)
