There's a "workshops" category on the wiki, and there might be some stuff in the FAQs on the wiki as well. Make good use of that search box!

Pages for individual items also generally say where they're made, and so forth.

well guess what thats right anooother question just wanted to jaze it up a bit mmmk so i cant really grasp how to make miltiary i now right now i dont need em but how do i make em i got miners from mining so i thought maybe a dwarf becomes a warrior from fighting so i made him a hunter and the deer or something kicked the crap out of him and hast woken up since also i havent encountered any thing other then deer i think. if you wondering what i mean i haven't seen any cobalts goblins humans or what not im thinking my world is new so there isn't many of em. Im sorry for this thread its gotten bigger then expected im just so fascinated by this game and this are questions that are bugging me threw out the day so you'll have to excuse me.

You need to select an individual dwarf and activate them for military service.  At that point, you can go to the military screen and either assign them to squads or decide what weapons and armor, if any, you want them to use.  From the military screen you can select a squad, choose where they sleep, how much food and water they carry, whether the squad is on duty or off duty, zoom in on the squad commander, etc.  Zooming in on the squad commander allows you to decide where to post the squad when they are on duty.  I would read about the Fortress Guard and Royal Guard on the Dwarf Fortress Wikipedia before messing with either one.

Miners will develop mining skill.  Hunters will develop a combination of skills, including ambushing, marksdwarfship, etc.  The more skills a dwarf has, and the higher those skills are, the more attributes a dwarf will have, and the higher those attributes will be.  A dwarf who is strong, agile, and tough will be better at pretty much any job, skill being equal, than a dwarf who is not strong, agile, and tough.

That said, soldiers will develop skills in whatever armor and / or weapons you assign them.  Keep them off duty for a while, with a barracks nearby, and they will spar in the barracks.  However, start them on something easy, like holding shields, wearing armor, and wrestling barehanded.  Otherwise your new recruits will get into all sorts of fatal and career ending accidents with their sharp toys.  When they've developed some skills and some attributes, up the ante and hand out weapons.  Expect at least a few recruits to fail this process and end up permanent invalids.  Their position in your military hierarchy hearkens back to the Fortress Guard and Royal Guard I mentioned before.

now im not getting any stone i know why but i dont know what it is. t the start of my campaign i clicked embark and it sayed this area has aqua (something like that) it might be hard to find stone

hope your enjoying these massive amount of questions
your friendly neighborhood noob (that's right i know where you live) Begory

You mean an aquifier.  Basically the water table on your map.  Geologically speaking, at a certain depth, say x, there is water.  This will occur when you dig into anything soft at or below that level, such as peat, moss, loam, sand, etc.  Since an aquifier tends to have infinite water, and water pressure is rarely your friend, you can tap into your aquifier unexpectedly and easily flood your fortress, maybe even your entire map.  Further, since rock tends to be a couple levels down on most maps not in the mountains, you somehow need to dig through or around the peat and moss at and below the aquifier level to get to your stone.  This often requires a fair degree of creativity and the deaths of many dwarves before you get the hang of it.

mmk this one is really my last question maybe mmk so i cant see any other civs i think this is because at the start it gives you that little kinda box and you go and embark and thats how big your map will be right? so i was wondering do i make my map bigger or is it because my world is new also can i go past that invisible wall that you make at the start of the game if you dont understand what im talking about please tell me what you dont understand and ill try to clear it up

The size of your embarkation does not effect whether other civilizations contact you.  Expect a caravan before winter and migrants by spring of the second year.  When you choose your fortress site on the embarkation screen, you can use tab to view what races have civilizations within caravan distance of your chosen fortress site.

Smaller embarkations prevent the game from slowing down as badly.  Frame rate (i.e. FPS) can be a big problem later in the game when you have hundreds of dwarves, merchants, livestock, and cats running around your fortress.  Vast rivers and lots of wildlife just makes it even harder for the computer to keep up.

Wow i come back and alot of you have gave useful advice thank you but one quick question how do i make a weapon rack im having a bit of trouble learning about the shops and pipes and traps. ill properly learn new things to get confused about but right now its just that

ex of confusion
how am i supposed to know what a mason does wish i would show me a list of things i need to build a building if there is tell me (im not really asking about the mason thing just an ex)

You can make a weapons rack out of stone at a masonry.  Make sure you have a dwarf who is allowed to do masonry work.  It does not matter whether they are good at it or not, simply that they can go and do it.  Shops can only be built later in the game when your tax collector nobleman arrives, thus activating your economy.  You need a a mechanism to make a trap.  Mechanisms are constructed from stone by a dwarf with the mechanic skill enabled at the mechanic's workshop.  Pipes can be used to move liquids around the map in concert with screwpumps.  They are usually constructed of wood by a dwarf with the carpentry skill enabled at the carpenter's workshop.

One again, you can reference the Dwarf Fortress Wikipedia to figure out what skills use which buildings and vice-versa.  It gets easier as your fortress gets larger, as you will eventually be able to assign jobs in the jobs screen.  However, your fortress leaders will need more experience before you can make use of that capability.

Hi its me again bumping my thread to keep this mess alive so my question is. can some one post me al ink to this wiki page that shows me what workshops do what like

craftsman workshop- makes furniture
something like that would make my game a lot less confusing because i have learned a lot other then how to make pipes work and magma things that i think i could learn in game and if not please comment and tell me other wise
thanks for all this help  ;D

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net

Search for "workshop".  You will get a web page with some diagrams, explanations, and a list of the different types of workshops and what they do.  Follow the hyperlinks to go into more detail about each of the different workshops.

The following copy / paste is an example:

# Alchemist's laboratory: Used to make soap.
# Ashery: Used to make lye and potash.
# Bowyer's workshop: Used to make bone or wooden crossbows.
# Butcher's shop: Used to turn some corpses and livestock into meat and usable materials.
# Carpenter's workshop: Used to make furniture from wood. Also some trap components.
# Clothier's shop: Used to make numerous items from cloth.

Begory, please try to use proper punctuation.  It makes a post much easier to use.
There's two ways to activate dwarves into the military.  One is to go to the military page and change their status from civilian to soldier (they start at recruit level if they have no pertinent military skills).  You can also set squad formation, weapon use and armor use on this page.  The other method is to view an indivdual dwarf by selecting him/her with the v command or from the unit list page.  From there you'll find a sub-menu that tells you to hit 'A' (capital A) to activate your dwarf into the military.
