Alright, as someone has already mention, you should ignore the dirt.  How would you feel if the elves came t trade and saw you digging into loam walls like a kobold?  you have a nice bit of stone over there with a commanding view of the magma.  take a few crossbows over there to clean out the pipe and then you can carve your way into the mountain side.  And might I suggest carving down into the mountain?  it would give you more stone to work with once you get past all that useless dirt.

Then you can build bridges across the magma, roads, walls and dig as deep and as greedily as you desire.
