Pop Cap and invisible monkey?
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:50:31 pm »

Hi all, my main computer is having issues (nothing a 12 gauge won't fix) so I'm on a borrowed computer. Which is less than enthusiastic about DF. Generating a world dropped FPS down to 3.

Prior to generating a world, I set the population cap to 20 in the init file, and set allowed children to 0. My fortress now has a population of 22, including one immigrant child.

As it dropped as low as 30fps when the elves came and I set a bunch of orders at once; prior to any migration; 20 is a bit much. Is that setting non-functional as of now, or am I just being aggravated? It did the same thing on my real computer, but that one has no problems with 200 dwarves and a waterfall. I had the FPS capped at 100 to keep it playable.

On a side note, I have an invisible monkey. I set my lone axedwarf to patrolling both junk rooms and my depot, yet the monkey kept stealing stuff. Since nothing is kept anywhere else, he's got to be there, but that dwarf (my only trained dwarf) cannot find him. I need to catch him, because I'm running out of meat.

Monkeys only steal one item each.  They grab something and leave the map with it.  Your phantom monkey is probably just a band of monkeys stealing stuff outside your fortress walls, like gear dropped by slain goblins.

Ah, ok. Must be stealing from the elves then. Nothing to care about about then, except no monkey meat. Maybe I should butcher the elves instead... mmm Elf BBQ.

Yeah, I've had monkeys and kobolds steal stuffs I didn't even know was outside  ;D and as for the popcap thing, I noticed it only takes real effect when carvan comes and goes, I suspect it's like 'reporting' how many people are there and below the cap, well, you can get any number of migrants. And stops once it's -above- the cap ( though childbirths can easily exceed it ) I suspect the allowed children setting affects in-fortress birth rather than migrants. And no, you can't butcher the elves, however fun it might be  ;)

Well I could, but I have no traps set up.

Did I mention this computer really sucks? Might and Magic: World of Xeen strains it; and that was released in 1994. For DOS. I played it on a 80486.

Hopefully I'll get no more migrants. the computer is NOT thrilled now, with just 22. Thanks for the answers.
