Booze and barrel issues
« on: December 05, 2008, 05:32:10 am »

I can never seem to make enough barrels in my forts..and without empty barrels I cant make beer.  Is there a way to set priority or limit the use of barrels?

You could make a stockpile dedicated to plants without any barrels, just make it big to compenstate, and cook a lot, big meal stacks won't fit into barrels, and take up less space as well as using up some products that would be barreled otherwise. Alternatively, set up a special stockpile for drink and only allow barrels on it, and not elsewhere.

Well, there's an option to reserve barrels in the stockpile menu but I'm not sure what it does

It is supposed to keep food out of that number of barrels, reserving them for booze production.

If you open the stockpile creation menu, there is an option to reserve barrels. This will stop the dwarves from using them in stockpiles, and only use them for jobs that require them (brewing being the biggest). I find that reserving 5 is usually enough for a mid to low population, and 10 is enough for a larger one.

You can also reserve bins, though I'm not sure what the point of that is exactly considering no jobs use bins directly and the only use they have is stockpiles. So be sure to reserve the right thing.
