At least with transgene-cows, they'll inject the fertilized ovum straight in to the womb and use the Caesarean section to get it out when it's done.

So there need not to be any mutilation of reproductive organs. Just mutilation of the creatures skin, but that'll be patched up later.

Also, it's quite a leap from 16 years to 10000ish years. Although my biology book claims that scientists have been able to examine the DNA of 7000 year old human brain cells Which is kind of irrelevant as the dudes in that article examine DNA that is 45 000 - 65 000 years old.

Well, they said they've found a completely frozen corpse in teh permafrost in siberia and they've been using that to recreate the genetic structure of the animal. Hair survives a long time in ice and theres plenty of it to use, being a wooly mammoth and all. I wonder if they'll become the sheep of the ice caps?
