first reason! i somehow absolutely need a perfect site. if the site doesnt meet every one of my little needs i dont go there.
second reason, the first few years are boring. i have never had much excitment when starting a fortress and although i know it will get better soon, i just cant stick with it.
any help and do you have any problems with sticking to fortresses?

Usually helps if stuff is trying to kill you from the instant you step off the wagon.

May i suggest ridiculous self-imposed challenges to spice up your fort?

Challenge yourself, if you can bring yourself to that low, low level that is.

For isntance, pick a random spot on the map with a river, bring only the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM gear.

Even more fun if all the wildlife is wilddead

Rysith's orcs help spice things up quite nicely.

Neoadept's zombie mod, on a savage/haunted/savage/terrifying map with underground river, river, chasm, bottomless pit, and HFS.

Oh yeah baby. You know I like it rough.

Check my sig, its a location that has almost everything a person needs AND you get big sieges along with all of them riding beak dogs. Never accually finished the fort I started there but I will someday. *Thinks about the steel coating everything*

I have the exact opposite problem.  I have fun getting things up and running, building my ridiculously convoluted supremely dwarfy defenses, killing the goblins who dare enter my domain, and then...

And then the goblins stop trying.  Just when the fighting is starting to get good, the sieges drop back down to two squads.  When you've prepared for something the entire game, there's only so much you can do to stay interested when that something ceases to exist.

Nice thing about the location I posted, the sieges hadn't run out yet after 4-6 years (don't really remember when they started only that they have been happening for awhile). If I continued playing it probably would have wound down because I had many of their leaders in captivity. However I think there was a human civ that wasn't on good terms either cuz I got a human ambush and a second human civ appeared on my civ screen so you might get sieges from them after the gobs stop.

I think Beak Dogs are always brought if the world simply has an evil swamp/marsh in it

Wish the worldgen let you place specific areas like no evil mountains or seas but at least one evil swamp. Preferably also let us disable the undead, I find beak dogs and harpies to be far more dangerous than the average skeleton. Not to mention you can eat the dogs

*facepalm* THERE it is.  I followed the link earlier and couldn't find where to get the world you mentioned.  Second time's a charm, I guess :P
