[40d7]dwarfs standing around well drinking getting dehydrated
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:44:47 pm »

I was running low on booze, so I build a dry well and later filled it. As soon as it beacme active, all 8 accesible squares around it were occupied by thirsty dwarfes with the drink job enabled. The well worked quite good, I saw the bucket moving up and down. The dwarfs stood there for nearly a month, though, and never stopped drinking. After some time they became dehydrated, so it seems they never got anything to drink.
Fixed the problem deconstructing the well, they went to the now full booze-stockpile and finished drinking in like a day or so.
O, and I think the water level the well was taking its water from didn't change, but since I'm not sure that one bucket equals one waterlevel, I don't know if this means anything.

similar problem occurs when the water freezes or becomes undrinkable otherwise.
had the same issue with a dirty stagnant pool, the openwater became inaccessable and the 'drinking' dwarves were all looking at the pond, dehydrating. I solved the stalemate by recruiting them and ordering them to the boozepile before releasing them again.

1 water bucket << 1 waterlevel.

Well, i didn't do exhaustive testing, but it might be due to the fact that the upper parts of the well were inside the glacier and therefore  the water was freezing inside the buckets while being hauled. It would not be a real bug then.

Hello!

While it may not be a bug strictly speaking, I think the well should become 'dry' if such a situation occurs.

I had a different ice problem in one of my recent fortresses - I built a well house on the surface (with walls and ceiling and stuff). During winter, a column of water directly below the well shaft would freeze solid, making the well unusable. The well was correctly declared 'dry'. I was able to resolve the problem by adding a second well down in the maintenance shaft touching the reservoire, so it was under the ground and two tiles to the right and down from the original well and thus the ice column.

Once the secondary well was installed, getting water for my wounded dwarf worked perfectly fine (before that, they kept cancelling the job due to lack of a water source).

So, my point is, in such a situation, the well should not be considered a water source (it doesn't work, after all). Once the game registers that, everything would be okay.
