Putting beds outdoors
« on: November 27, 2008, 02:42:33 am »

Being that it's Thanksgiving morning I decided to be bit adventurous and do something different, for me anyway, and build my entire fortress outside.  I suppose this is similar to the way human settlements do things, but I don't ever recall finding a bed anywhere in those places...

Anyway, I spent a good three hours building little homes with little wooden floors for my community only to find out that the hovels were still technically "outside" and now my dwarves have really no where to sleep...

Does anyone know of a way to mod DF so that I can create the quaint, farming-dwarf community of my dreams?

Put a roof on yer huts and make 'em inside.

Since I'm new to outdoor constructions, I'm not too sure how to go about doing that...would a floor on completely covering the 2nd level of a "house" count as a roof?

Don't feel bad. I cover my first hovel with floodgates after roofing them, because I didn't check to see if roofing solved the problem (basically, I tried to build a bed in the one place with no roof)

Make a little canvas/tent model for your "hut" :D

Although it might be hard to make, it makes your outdoor place look cooler :D

Make sure to conserve building material by not putting flooring over the wall-top-floors. Kind of a no-brainer, but it's worth noting.

I usually find that a ramp is the easiest way to get access for roof building.

True, that was how I started my first post-3d-realization fort.

Building underground is a lot more hassel free, but I might make a warehouse or something outside, just for the hell of it.
