A water source is pretty much it.

Oh, and a terrifying biome. I just like picking a random place along a river/brook, so long as it's terrifying. Need some kind of challenge (for my current fort I'm making 5-dwarf squads, only the leaders of which get weapons, like a cheap bronze mace from a caravan).

From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

a single steel axe, and that anvil  ;D

If you're going to bring an anvil, you may as well just bring some metal and make the axe yourself. Saves a lot of points for other things.

Anyway, as to the original question... Not a whole lot, really. I generally just embark on areas that look interesting... My current fort is next to a lake fed by three rivers, and some mirthful mountains. No other features as far as I know. There was a decent amount of wood though.

Other maps have included a haunted cliffside with no water or magma, a tundra with a magma pipe, and some other area that I don't remember that well... Something with a chasm and magma I think. I guess if I were to name one thing though, it would be wood. Mountains are nice too.

Who needs 7 when you only need 1?

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Because I get 7 dwarves no matter what... why don't you mention solid ground, tools, or temperatures your dwarves can survive in?

HFS, goblins, trees or magma, and any water.

Playing a cheesemaker in an average Fortress 'round here would be. Freaking. Terrifying.

Just magma.

If possible, I like trees and sand and flux, but if not thats still doable. But I am addicted to magma.

a magma pipe and some form of river (be it a brook, an underground river, or a normal one) and bauxite, bauxite is a must considering my many hairbrain schemes involving the magma, and I'm not suicidal enough to settle for adamantine (says the guy settled on a glacier and somehow had all but five of his dwarves die of thirst (water water everywhere but not a drop to drink :P))

Divide by zero and sacrifice some of the players to Armok probably. Though this would be somewhat cool to have around.
Oh, Toady already does such things on a regular basis. I think he calls it 'Tuesday'.

At least one pick. And a dwarf or seven. Probably some seeds, too.

Many trees and thick vegetation. For without wood, most of my forts wouldn't have half the internals or outsides and without every second square being a shrub, the dwarves will starve before summer :P. Also, a large flat section that the fortress may be built under and farms above. And some rock. Well, alot more than some rock maybe.

Magma... not really needed and I usually have troubles with too much water... ;)
