You forgot the option of building a huge tank next to it and filling it with the magma, then letting it all drain back in when you're done!
That's the same as option 1 just a lot more work.

The Volcano Fort: that was me.
I was actually thinking of Hishan's and my fort, but it's obvious that others done it to.

I tried building a tower in a bottomless pit once, but it didn't work out so well. Turns out, you can't build down...

... y'know, this makes sense?

But now I can't stop giggling madly over the idea of a dwarf, dangling from a rope with a pick and a bucket of bricks in hand, frantically yelling up at his compatriots,

"GET MEH OUTTA HERE, LADS!  THE BATS!  THE BAAAATTS!!"
Build from the lowest z, then up.

I'd say just tunnel the bottom of the magma shaft into a glowing pit.  As long as both of your miners don't meet fiery deaths, the rest should take care of itself.

In other news, I found a perfect location for the fort I mentioned earlier in the thread.

Doesn't have magma, sadly, but it's in a swamp, so there's plenty of trees (and, given the depth of the canyon, I can easily bypass the aquifer). There's even sand. =D

I'm also using a custom race that can breed flux (don't ask), so I should have a thriving steel (and even better) industry in a couple years, if the damned fire mantas don't kill me in a couple months.

The World Without Knifebear — A much safer world indeed.
regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.
