In that case, no biggy. For the record I've been quite nice to them and buy lots of their animals. If they do go to war, they'll have polar bears and giant desert scorpions to fight.

Placating elves? Dwarves do their placating with wooden crossbows and bone bolts. Make some bolts from elf bones for this occasion.

You seem to have a cause and effect problem. We kill the Elves, THEN we get the Elf bone bolts. They'll just have to settle for werewolf.

Although, we do have 1900 iron bolts in stock. I suppose wood was involved there somewhere.

Honestly, 1900 iron bolts? What a waste. You could have built an iron tower.  :P

In any case, that's only 76 bars. Not even a decent floor.

But by forging 1900 iron bolts, think of how many goblins he'll be able to kill so he can melt down their iron equipment!

Ok, consider.

If you can stop a Goblin ambush, you can stop an elven siege. Elves come armed with WOODEN weapons, WOODEN bolts, and NO armor. Even if you get sieges, it'll be a COMPLETE cakewalk for you military, and just more bones to donate to "Bones for Bolts" program.

Well, the worry is not that they could dent my military because they can't. The worry is that their active season is spring, the same time I get my migrants. I'd rather not have migrants coming in at the same time as the woods are crawling with Elven ambushes.

This is pretty easy.

Make wooden bolts on repeat until your safe.  Then get enough wood to put you back over the limit.  Shoot the elves with the wooden bolts till dead.  Rinse and repeat.

This will also solve the problem of not having elf bones to start making your bolts from AND give you a massive stockpile for your dwarves to train with.
