Poorly healed breaks
« on: November 14, 2008, 04:15:53 pm »

I started thinking about broken bones, and healing them. Dwarves have some pretty low technology, which would equal a general lack of surgical procedures, right? So, if something complicated (like an ankle, or wrist) would break, there would be a good chance that it wouldn't heal right. Even a broken arm, set by an inexperienced dwarf, could heal crooked. I think it would be cool if health care became a skill, which would determine how well the wounded dwarf would heal. An inexperienced dwarf would possibly make things worse which could outright kill a very wounded dwarf, or result in a poorly set arm which would be more likely to break in the future, or even remove a strength status level. An experienced dwarf would be almost guaranteed to set a broken arm properly, with no loss of function, but an ankle would be beyond them. And a master might be able to do some rudementary surgeries like trepanning.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

And legendary dwarves will make bones harder to break, right? Right?

I want to see metal plates used to help bones heal straight.

Buck up friendo, we're all on the level here.
I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

I've always wanted healthcare to be a skill. I've also wanted dwarfs to mix alcohol with water to make a watered down drink instead of just water.

I thought watering down the booze was a crime in dwarven society somewhat similar to murder in ours--but worse.

There's been talk of adding a Doctor skill of some kind rather than rolling dice every season for injuries. I could see poorly-healed injuries along the lines of permanent light gray (or, heaven forbid, brown) equivalent status.

It would also open up the possibility of prostheses, though at massive penalty.

Health Care is currently nothing but handing out food and water, isn't it? Not much skill there..

Nervous system injuries are annoying as is (not to mention nonsensical). A good doctor should make the dwarves heal faster. Otherwise your first injuries end up being fatal or crippling in every damn fort and that'll get frustrating fast
