Best area ever. EVER.
« on: November 14, 2008, 06:29:11 pm »

I was just zoomin around a map for an embark site, and what do I find? A river, leading into a lake, in the middle of a mountain. It has only two embarkable tiles, with the river inbetween them and surrounded on all sides by mountain.

Anywhoz, I embark and use the 'U'. Carp. Sturgeon. Lamprey. Hundreds of them. I order an all dwarves inside and hope to god they don't climb up my well. A season passes. Traders arrive. Being forced to let my dwarves out, I check my 'U' list tentatively, and cried tears of confusion and joy. Every single fish was dead. I look around the river, and see that there was a diagonal tile that was safe from the flow, but was drained to 1 water. Every single fish had been sucked in there, leaving a humongous pile of skulls and bones. My men were given double rounds that night at the bar.

Kind of a shame, really. :( I would've wanted to kill the carp myself...

From "Angroshs Kinder" Das schwarze Auge Zwergenhandbuch - (Angrosh Children, the dark eye, german pen&paper, dwarven handbook):
"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

I don't get it.  Why would that kill the carp?

Carp and other fish have the Water-breathing tag, which means if there's not enough water, they start to "drown" and thus die.

So there's that, as well. It looks like the only chronic problems that water can't cure are nausea and cave spider bites.
Which, coincidentally enough, can be cured by magma.

So...........why do they move there in the first place?

And if they CAN move there, why can't they move out?

They didn't choose to move there is my guess. For whatever reason the five tile wide river is draining faster than the lake/ocean/whatever this body of water is, can produce the water. The fish get trapped in the water flow and slowly move back towards the exit, and most end up swimming off this little side passage I had earlier channeled for a well that failed due to the fact that the water stays at 1 no matter what. The fish swim in there and then air-drown rather rapidly.

And to Rhenaya, I'm using 40d, I just have the feeling that this is either a bug or an extremely rare case.

If the water is always at 1 you can dig a ramp and harvest all those bones and skulls.
