Newbie question about making wells
« on: November 20, 2008, 04:32:12 pm »

So I'm trying to make a well by draining a pond and I'm using the instructions here:

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Well_guide

I've already made the deep area that will get filled up with water so now I just need to get the water to rush in from above.  Problem is, whenever I try to dig around there (either upwards from underground or downwards nearby the lake) the dwarves stop because they say its dangerous or too close to water (which is true of course).  So how do I get them to dig so that the water will move below?

The "damp tile" warning just happens once for any given tile.  You can redesignate that tile, and they'll dig through it just fine.

It's annoying when you're digging through 10 in a row, because it'll stop you 10 times, but you'll still make it through.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

If you've got a river (with no carp!) going through, you can still fill up the pit via channeling or bucket brigades (specify your pit as such using zones, and build some buckets so dwarves will fill it up)

I usually dig a cistern, and build a tunnel straight to the river. Hook up a floodgate to control the river's flow so as to prevent flooding; and another to block the well access. Then I drown my miners accidentally while filling it.

My current mess, I even have an execution chamber ready, though I can't drain it without flooding the prison. Still have to test it though, as soon as I get through using Antmen to control my population.
