Justed noted that when a military dwarf, wrestler, has Woodcutting assigned as a job, he will try to pick up an axe because he's a woodcutter, then drop it because he's a wrestler, then pick it up because he's a woodcutter, ad infinitum.
Military tools should obviously override the civilian requirements.

My experience has always been that setting weapon preferences will clear professions as needed. So I did some poking around, and:

If you set a woodcutter to wrestle from the [p]refs/[s]oldiering screen then the woodcutter profession will remain set. Selecting any other weapon, or anything including wrestling in the [m]ilitary screen, will clear the woodcutter profession. Of course, all bets are off if you use profession setting via memory hacks.

Once you work out how to get a dwarf into the nonsensical woodcutter+wrestler state, then its pretty easy to reproduce. I can go from embark to confused dwarf in less time than it took to write this.

My point was that the game logic tries (and fails, in one case) to keep dwarfs out of being both woodcutter and wrestler, rather than trying to sensibly handle their behaviour once in that state.

In the same way, setting mining clears woodcutting and vice-versa, but if you somehow managed to get a dwarf into a miner+woodcutter state, you would no doubt get wacky behaviour. (Hmm. I wonder if the Embark Now random professions check this?)

Course I can't practice being a wrestler with an axe! I actually had this glitch a few moths back. Drafted a wood cutter to get his ass inside (or something along those lines) and he just stood there. Eventually told him to get an ax, then he decided to fall into a martial trance and wipe out two gobbo squads then rush back in. Then the power went out and the save was lost.
